The Kenya Bureau of standards (KEBS) is a statutory organization of the Government of Kenya established by the Standards Act, Cap 496 of the laws of Kenya in July 1974.  ASSISTANT QUALITY ASSURANCE OFFICER, Textile

    Key Responsibilities:

  1. Facilitating implementation of Kenya Standards and other approved specifications in the industry, in the relevant field.
  2. Enforcing mandatory Kenya Standards and handling samples for quality testing.
  3. Receiving, analyzing laboratory test reports and giving feedback to the client
  4. Implementing KEBS mandatory Standardization Mark Scheme.
  5. Implementing KEBS voluntary Diamond Mark Scheme.
  6. Carrying out product certification audits under the schemes  4 & 5 of ISO/IEC Guide 67
  7. Carrying out market surveillance on product quality in the assigned field and monitoring usage of KEBS Standardization and Diamond Marks in the market.
  8. Participating in prosecution of the various parties contravening the Standards Act.
  9. Receiving, investigating and resolving consumer related product complaints.
  10. Providing consultancy services on product and process quality to industry and other stakeholders.
  11. Carrying out quality contractual services on products and processes in the relevant field, on behalf of KEBS.
  12. Participating in the relevant technical committee meeting for development of standards.
  13. Marketing and promoting KEBS services to industry
  14. Bringing on board products without standards and providing details for the development of kenya standards.
  15. Preparing work schedules and monthly reports

ASST. METROLOGY OFFICER (MECHATRONIC ENGINEER) (1 position)

Reporting to: Assistant Manager Length 3

    Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assist to maintain custody of the national measurement standards in the assigned measurement field;
  2. Assist to maintain the traceability of the national measurement standards to the International System of Units (SI);
  3. Provide calibration services in the respective measurement fields;
  4. Assist in the implementation and maintenance of a laboratory quality management system (QMS) in line with the ISO/IEC 17025 standard;
  5. Assist in the development of new techniques of measurement and improve on the current ones;
  6. Assist in the achievement and maintenance of international recognition of the national measurement standards and the laboratory’s calibration and measurement capabilities (CMCs);
  7. Assist in the development of the laboratory’s strategic plan (SP) and participate in its implementation and review;
  8. Assist in the preparation, implementation and review of the laboratory’s performance contract
  9. Carry out assigned research and development work;

    Key Responsibilities:

  1. Carrying out quality inspection of imported goods.
  2. Enforce Kenya /approved standards and Legal Notice No. 78
  3. Draw and submit samples for laboratory analysis.
  4. Receive, interpret and forward laboratory reports to importers.
  5. Advice importers on KEBS import regulations/ Standards.
  6. Recommend Seizure and destruction or reship substandard/ counterfeit goods.
  7. Recommend release of goods meeting the requirements the relevant Kenya/ approved standards.
  8. Maintain inspection records/ data.
  9. Provide information necessary for development of new Kenya standards or review of existing ones.

Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) seeks to recruit a highly competent and dynamic Regional Science Officer.

CCAFS is a new major collaborative endeavor between the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research and the Earth System Science Partnership, research communities, and their respective partners.  Research over a ten-year period starting in 2010 is aimed at overcoming the additional threats posed by a changing climate to achieving food security, enhancing livelihoods and improving environmental management in the developing world.

East Africa is one of three CCAFS implementing regions. The program leadership of this region is based at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi, and regional activities will be carried out in 4 countries and at six bench mark locations in the region.

The science officer will report to the regional program leader and will be responsible for managing and overseeing a growing portfolio of collaborative partnerships and action research activities.

Key responsibilities:

  1. Assisting with the development and management of research partnerships;
  2. Contributing to the writing of reports and program documentation;
  3. Coordinating the evaluation of partner research proposals and implementation of projects within the region;
  4. Organizing and contributing to workshops, meetings, training and other dissemination events;
  5. Representing the region and CCAFS in national, regional and international meetings, and helping to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with partners;
  6. Reviewing and synthesizing knowledge and contributing to action research at local, national and regional scales within own areas of expertise.

Requirements:

  1. PhD or equivalent academic qualifications in a field related to agricultural sciences, social science or development practice and a minimum of two years of relevant work experience involving program management or a relevant MSc and at least four years experience in program management.
  2. Excellent writing and communication skills in English; good working knowledge of French would be an advantage.
  3. Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to relate effectively with agricultural research and development partners at regional and/or international levels.
  4. A high level of computer competence (internet, email, spreadsheets, word processing, presentation packages; databases an asset) is required.
  5. Demonstrated ability to report and publish research that is relevant to development challenges and willingness to take initiative, work independently and with attention to detail.
  6. Location: Nairobi, Kenya with frequent travel to areas where there are CCAFS activities.
  7. Duration:  This is an internationally recruited position for three years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding.

Climate Change, Agriculture, Food Security (CCAFS) seeks to recruit a highly competent and dynamic Program Assistant for its Regional Program in East Africa.

The CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) is a 10-year research initiative launched by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and the Earth System Science Partnership (ESSP). The CCAFS program seeks to overcome the threats to agriculture and food security in a changing climate, exploring new ways of helping vulnerable rural communities adjust to global changes in climate.

The CCAFS East Africa Regional office is hosted at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI).

The CCAFS Program Assistant will be part of a small Program Management Team and will in particular involve in ensuring that adequate program projects, financial and administrative systems are established and maintained. He/she will be responsible for providing technical backstopping to the overall Program management. The CCAFS Program Assistant will report to the Regional Program Leader. This position will be based at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) Headquarters in Nairobi but it may require frequent travel throughout the Eastern Africa region.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provide administrative backstopping to the overall Program management;
  2. Support in organizing CCAFS events and workshops;
  3. Assist in developing and maintaining a filing system and data base for managing CCAFS Program documentation, including concept notes, project proposals, project agreements, etc;
  4. Manage the data archive for the CCAFS program and its regional partners;
  5. Establish and maintain a key partner contacts data base and email list server, including all Principal Investigators, Project team members, and other partner stakeholders;
  6. Support in establishing and keeping up to date a  resource mobilization list of key contacts;
  7. Assist the Regional Program Leader in the preparation of competitive Calls for Concept notes and managing of the review process, full proposal development, approval and contractual agreements;
  8. Assist the Regional Program Leader in the monitoring and evaluation of CCAFS Projects, including monitoring of milestones and in the preparation of regular technical and financial reports;
  9. Manage public awareness events with the media, linked with events such as the CCAFS regional partner meetings;
  10. Provide other administrative and financial support to the Regional Program Leader and the Administration as requested;
  11. Manage procurement and logistics services for the CCAFS E.A Regional Office;
  12. Carry out other duties as requested by the Regional Program Leader.

Requirements:

  1. Bachelors degree in Business Administration or a related field.
  2. Post graduate training in Communications would be an added advantage.
  3. Minimum 3 years related work experience.
  4. Computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office and communications tools; e.g. Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop.
  5. Excellent communication skills; written and verbal communication in English, including web based communications; knowledge of other languages an advantage;
  6. Administrative and financial management skills for project monitoring and program management;
  7. Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work within a multicultural environment.
  8. Team building capability.
  9. Capacity to take initiative and demonstrate good judgment.
  10. Superior multi-tasking skills with the ability to coordinate, prioritize and organize workload, meet deadlines and work under pressure with minimal supervision.

Terms of appointment:  This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus and is open to Kenyan nationals only. The position is on a 2-year renewable contract subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Job level and salary : This position is job Grade 2C, with a starting gross salary of KES 95,833 per month. This is exclusive of other benefits provided by ILRI.
